A Stellenbosch University professor has been elected to serve on the UN Committee on Economic‚ Social and Cultural Rights

Sandra Liebenberg‚ who occupies the HF Oppenheimer chair in human rights law in the university’s law faculty‚ was nominated by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation in recognition of her “extensive experience in human rights law‚ particularly in the area of economic‚ social and cultural rights”.

The UN Economic and Social Council elected Liebenberg and the Egyptian candidate Mohamed Ezzeldin Abdel-Moneim as candidates representing Africa. Their four-year term begins on January 1.
