Chairperson of African Union Commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma called on United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to intervene for the resolution of the Western Sahara conflict through a referendum on self-determination
“We urge the UN Secretary General to intervene to resolve the conflict,” she said, adding that “in 2016, we cannot ignore the will of the people of Western Sahara who have struggled to decide their future.”
“The referendum is a promise that we have made, their future in Africa depends on it,” said Dlamini Zuma at the 26th AU Summit in Addis Ababa.
Prime Minister Abdelkader Taleb Omar met Sunday in Addis Ababa with the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 26th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, held under the theme “2016, Year of Human Rights in Africa.”
