Winner of the Per Anger International Prize for Human Rights and Democracy

Durban-based human rights activist, Mr Sibusiso Innocent Zikode has won the Per Anger International Prize for Human Rights and Democracy for his work as the president of the Abahlali baseMjondolo Shack Dwellers Movement. Zikode’s work centres around the right to homes, land, and survival for impoverished and marginalised inhabitants of shack settlements.  

Upon winning the award, Zikode said: 
“The award is recognition of the courage shown and the ideal of a better future by the people of the Abahlali baseMjondolo movement. This is not my award alone, it belongs to the people of Abahlali and the fallen heroes who have lost their lives during the course of the struggle for a better life.” 

Chair of the SALO Board, Bishop Rubin Phillip, works closely with the Abahlali baseMjondolo shack dwellers movement.
