Africa Day is celebrated on 25 May to commemorate the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963. The day is celebrated to acknowledge the successes of the OAU (now the African Union) in its fight against colonialism and apartheid and to observe the progress it has made while reflecting on the common challenges faced by the continent. The theme for this year’s Africa Month is: “The year of Arts, Culture and Heritage: in the year of Charlotte Maxeke”
