International Day of Persons with Disabilities
SALO commemorates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December 2023) (IPID) to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society, as stated by the UNGA in 1992 under resolution 47/3. SALO acknowledges the contributions people with disabilities make to all communities under the 2023 theme of ‘United in action to rescue and achieve sustainable development goals for, with and by persons with disabilities’. In our South African context, 3 December marks the end of Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM), observed from 3 November-3 December, and the South African government has approved the White Paper on the rights of persons with Disabilities, consisting of an implementation matrix. It sets indicators that align with the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030. Now more than ever, it is crucial for all people from all societies to continuously ally with and raise awareness on the consequences of any impairment (whether physical, cognitive, sensory, or emotional) that affects members of their society and their mental well-being.
