International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the political, cultural, and socioeconomic achievements of women. This day brings attention to issues such as abuse against women, gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence.
The 2022 UN theme is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. The theme highlights the contributions made by women and girls around the globe who participate in their communities to promote adaptation, mitigation, and responses to climate change, to build a more sustainable future for all.
According to the UN, “Women are increasingly being recognized as more vulnerable to climate change impacts than men, as they constitute the majority of the world’s poor and are more dependent on the natural resources which climate change threatens the most.”
The day recognises, celebrates and honors women’s leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.
