SALO Public Workshop: Brighter Horizons: Stakeholder Strategies for Ending Load Shedding – 23 Nov 2023

This public virtual workshop delved into the facets of Eskom and the Just Transition towards ending load shedding in South Africa.

It served as an opportunity for stakeholders to share knowledge and insights to chart a sustainable and inclusive path forward on tangible solutions for the current power crises. This workshop discussed how we can collectively work towards ending load shedding, achieving energy security, and fostering a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for South Africa.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from different sectors to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with a just transition to a clean energy future in South Africa. We discussed on the following topics:

  • Eskom’s reconstruction as a baseload energy producer and its internal capacity
  • The need for energy production, renewable energy, and infrastructure in a just transition
  • The overall implications of a just transition, including social, economic, and environmental impacts 
  • The role of different stakeholders in supporting a just transition

The workshop featured presentations from experts in the field, as well as panel discussions and a question-and-answer session. The goal of the workshop was to develop a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with a just transition and to identify concrete steps that can be taken to achieve a sustainable and equitable energy future for South Africa.
