Somalia President says electoral process for August ‘critical’

The meeting of National Leadership Forum (NLF) has proceeded into its second day with urgently pressing agendas on the table, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking in Southwestern Baidoa town on Thursday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud touted upcoming August vote as ‘critical’ and “a test” for the country’s nascent and rebuilding institutions.

“The upcoming election is inseparable from the future of new and democratic Somalia,” Mohamud told the forum hosted by Southwest State President Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan.

UN to offer 1.9 mln USD to curb cholera outbreak in Somalia

The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will release 1.9 million U.S. dollars to help contain the outbreak of cholera in Somalia.

OCHA said in its report on Thursday that the money, from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, will be used to contain the cholera outbreak in the next three months.

“It will support complementary health, logistics and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities in the most affected areas with the highest caseload and notable increase in reported deaths,” OCHA said.
