A South Sudanese army general who switched allegiance and joined rebel forces under the leadership of the former vice-president Riek Machar said he had rejected separate peace talks with the government.

South Sudan tops 2014 fragile state index

The world’s newest country, South Sudan, has come top of the list of fragile states in this year’s index released by the US-based Fund for Peace.

Somalia – which came top for the past six years – fell to second place, followed by CAR, DR Congo, Sudan and Chad.
