AU Rights Commissioner Urges Greater Freedoms in Zimbabwe

The African Union is urging Zimbabwe to repeal or amend laws that curtail the right to freedom of expression, freedom of the media and other protections.

Speaking in Harare, AU commissioner for Human Rights Pansy Tlakula said she is happy with a constitutional court decision repealing a defamation law that opponents said was being used to stifle journalists.

High Court Clears MDC-T’s 2.2 Million Jobs Protest – Demo Set for Bulawayo

The High Court in Bulawayo on Thursday granted the mainstream MDC-T permission to stage its planned demonstration in the city. The protest, to be led by party president Morgan Tsvangirai, is slated for May 28.

The MDC-T is using the demonstration to push the ruling party to avail the 2.2 million jobs it dangled to the electorate in the last elections. After, police refused to allow the planned protests, the opposition party approached the High Court on Tuesday with an urgent chamber application.
