International Day of Democracy – 15 September

The International Day of Democracy, observed every year on the 15th of September, was established by the United Nations in 2007 to celebrate and promote the principles of democracy worldwide. It is a moment to reflect on the importance of participation, transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights as the foundations of democratic governance.

On this day, people are reminded that democracy is more than a political system; it is the collective right of citizens to have their voices heard, to elect leaders through free and fair processes, and to help shape the future of their societies. The observance also sheds light on the challenges democracies face, from corruption to political division, and calls for stronger global cooperation to safeguard democratic institutions.
