This week, the African Union (AU), formerly the Organization of African Unity (OAU) celebrates its Golden Jubilee: 50 Years of existence. As we celebrate the AU’s Golden Jubilee, we would want you, our readers, to remember that 8 years ago around the same time in Zimbabwe, the poor, vulnerable and the marginalized had their homes destroyed under “Operation Murambatsvina” (Operation ‘Clean-Up the cities’). We say this must never happen again in Zimbabwe. We sincerely hope that the new constitution signed into Law today (22/05/2013) by President Mugabe will be applied in letter and spirit to protect the ordinary citizens.
In this 110th edition of The Zimbabwe Briefing, we share with you updates from the high-powered Civil Society delegation that is in Addis Ababa to remind our leaders that Zimbabwe remains a hot spot needing their continued attention especially at this delicate moment. We share with you the Briefing Paper with issues and demands before a new election is held. We also share with you reflections on the AU at 50 from our Director, McDonald Lewanika. As we rekindle and keep alive hope for our nation, we also share with you an update on a new documentary: Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law which was launched in Johannesburg last week Friday.
